In 1496, the French army plunders the Spanish fronteer village and castle of Salses. To stop them in the future, the king Ferdinand the Catholic decides to build the fortress of Salses. In 1503, the fortress resists to a first siege, although it was not even finished. After a century of peace, brought by the treaty signed in 1544 between Charles Quint and François I, the fortress is sieged three times during the 30 Years War, then it's finally conquered by the French in 1642. After the Treaty of Pyrénées signed in 1659, the zone of Roussillon becomes a French territory and thus the fortress is now too far from the new fronteer to be useful. It becomes a historical monument in 1886.
